Panorama Book: Accordion with Decorative Panels

WHEN: March 6, 2027, 10am–4pm

Make a book that shows off your collages or artistic creations. This Hedi Kyle structure combines an accordion with panels that highlight your artwork or cutouts. We’ll learn the proper way to fold an accordion and finish up with making a hard cover.

Bring small photocopies of your artwork (no bigger than 1.875” x 3.75”) for 6” x 3” book.

You will need a glue stick, bone folder, awl, needle, X-acto knife, ruler, cutting mat, scissors, and pencil (if you do not already have these the instructor will have them available for you to borrow). Any collage materials, rubber stamps and stamp pads, drawing pens, or pencils you may have.

Pamphlets & Concertinas: Falling Book Structure

WHEN: April 3, 2027, 10am–4pm

This book structure is a dynamic concertina that will wow the viewer. Sewn to ribbons and a concertina and then pamphlets, the pamphlets collapse when you are through reading them and the ribbons are pulled shut. Keith Smith describes this as an Eastern fold book known as a spine-pleat. This specific structure is based on a variation of the spine-pleat inspired by Kumi Korf’s work.

Tunnel Book

WHEN: May 15, 2027, 10am–4pm

What is a tunnel book, you ask? Inspired by 18th-century peepshows and theatrical stage sets, this structure is made of layered panels with cut-outs. The book itself is held together by concertinas on either side. Tunnel books naturally have the optical illusion of perspective, which leads to the drama of the book.

Coptic & Casebound

WHEN: June 5 & 6, 2027, 10am–2pm

THIS CLASS IS TWO SESSIONS: June 5 to 6 from 10 to 2 with a 30 minute lunch.

In this hands-on class, you’ll learn the fundamental techniques of traditional bookbinding, making both a casebound and a coptic book. The final books are perfect for sketchbooks, mood trackers, travel logs, stamp art, gratitude journals, diaries, or whatever else you can think of.

First, you’ll familiarize yourself with folding signatures and sewing a text block (the pages). With the coptic stitch, you’ll learn a visible continuous chain stitch that links across the exposed spine of the book. With the casebound book, you’ll make a case (the hardcover) from bookboard, book cloth, and decorative paper. And then you'll learn to "case in" the text block (create the book itself).

This class is ideal for folks with some experience in bookmaking or hand-sewing and those interested in the art of handmade books. All materials are provided, and students will leave with two completed hardcover books.

Carousel Book

WHEN: June 19, 2027, 10am–4pm

The carousel book form was popularized in the 1920s and 1930s as children’s books. In this course, we will construct a carousel by creating a series of “scenes” that operate like the pages of a book. First, we’ll measure and fold three accordions; then we’ll cut and collage/rubber stamps/ decorate the frames and inner pages. Finally, we’ll sew the three accordions together to complete the book. Once finished this book looks like five theater scenes from the side; from the top it looks like a star. You are encouraged to bring collage materials, pictures, stamps, etc. to decorate your book.

Intimate Spaces: A Book of Rooms—2 classes

WHEN: July 10 & 11, 2027, 10am–12:30pm

THIS CLASS IS TWO SESSIONS: July 10 to 11 from 10 to 12:30, because of the heat in the studio.

Captivate readers with this dynamic structure. A seemingly simple codex – which is actually two accordions attached together – opens delightfully to reveal three hidden rooms when the center page is pulled open. Each “room” provides an intimate space for showcasing your illustrations, photographs, collages, etc. This versatile book is appropriate for both beginners and experienced bookmakers.
