Pushing Boundaries Through Experimentation

Artists’ books are also known for breaking rules.

Some works reject readability entirely, focusing instead on texture, shape, and movement, such as Ode à l'Oubli by Louise Bourgeois. Ode à l'Oubli is a series of collages made from Bourgeois’s old clothes and linens.

Others invite the viewer to rearrange pages, unfold hidden compartments, or interact with the object in unconventional ways. For example, La Prose du Transsibérien by Sonia Delaunay is an accordion from 1913, which opens vertically to represent the long route of the Trans-Siberian Railway.

Contemporary artists continue to push the boundaries of what a book can be. One of the most famous book artists practicing today, Julie Chen, is always unique in her interpretation of a book including her book, Wayfinding.

This spirit of experimentation makes artists’ books one of the most innovative forms of creative expression today.
